This is how you reach your New Year's resolutions
Having New Year's resolutions is something that belongs to every new year, and most people are familiar with the saying "new year, new opportunities." The new year can definitely bring new opportunities to create new habits, quit a bad habit, or learn something new. At the same time, almost everyone knows the feeling of setting a number of goals for the new year without being able to follow through. New Year's resolutions themselves can be both motivating and effective in creating new habits, but this requires that they are followed. There can be several reasons why people don't reach their goals, and here you can read about various pitfalls to avoid and tips on how to achieve your New Year's resolutions!

Three things to avoid when making New Year's resolutions
1. Setting too many goals
This is a classic pitfall, as people see the new year as an opportunity to accomplish everything they didn’t manage the previous year. But by having too many goals, they often become unclear and difficult to carry out in practice. Therefore, you should pick one or two goals that you want to focus on.
2. Making goals based on things you really don’t want
Another common pitfall is setting goals that don't align with what you like, who you are, and what makes you happy. Although the new year brings opportunities, you won't wake up as a new person the moment the year changes. Therefore, it is very important to set goals based on what you truly believe in and want to accomplish. For example, if you want to eat less meat but really love eating meat, it will be difficult to follow through if your New Year’s resolution is to become vegetarian. A simpler and clearer goal might be to eat meat-free meals one to two days a week instead.
3. Not implementing the goals into everyday life
This is perhaps the most important pitfall to avoid. It is incredibly important to break down New Year’s resolutions into small goals you can achieve daily. This way, you can track your progress and adjust the goals if you have set them too big or too difficult.

The most important thing to remember is that it takes time to change or develop a new habit. How long it takes, however, is much debated. But it can take anywhere from one to three months. Therefore, the most important tip is to keep going if your motivation fades, and work on the smaller goals while keeping the big goal or New Year's resolution as your motivation.
